Jazz Combo &
Jazz Ensemble is the Sturgis East big band which features a traditional high school jazz band setup. It includes a rhythm section, multiple saxophones, trombones, and trumpets. However, the group is flexible and willing to take in flutes, clarinets, and other instruments.
Jazz Combo is the Sturgis East improvisational group. This group is somewhat smaller and puts more emphasis on learning about scales, chords, and other improvisational techniques.
Who should join? Students in grades 9-12 are invited to participate in one - or both - of these extracurricular groups. What do the groups play? A mix of jazz styles are presented in these groups - from swing to bossa, funk to more experimental jazz styles.
